Overview

Tucked away in the secluded folds of the western Ladakhi mountains, Kanji is an offbeat village that offers a rare blend of natural serenity, high-altitude adventure, and untouched cultural beauty. Located approximately 75 kilometers west of Leh and about 15 km off the Kargil–Leh highway near Lamayuru, Kanji lies at an altitude of around 3,870 meters (12,700 feet) and remains one of the lesser-known but most rewarding destinations in Ladakh.

A peaceful oasis surrounded by snow-capped peaks, barley fields, and traditional Ladakhi homes, Kanji is ideal for trekkers, photographers, and travelers looking to immerse themselves in authentic village life away from the tourist crowd.

Location & Accessibility

Location: Kanji is a remote village tucked deep in the Sham Valley region, west of Lamayuru, surrounded by dramatic mountains and vast landscapes.

Distance from Leh: Approximately 130 km (4 to 5 hours by road), including a detour from Lamayuru.

Best Time to Visit: June to September, when roads are accessible and weather is relatively mild.

Accessibility:

  • By Road: From Leh, follow the Leh–Srinagar highway (NH1D) to Lamayuru, then take a 15 km rough but motorable road to Kanji. SUVs or high-clearance vehicles are recommended for the final stretch.

  • Public Transport: No direct buses; travelers can hire private taxis or shared jeeps from Lamayuru.

  • Mobile Network: Very limited or no coverage—ideal for those seeking a digital break.

  • Facilities: Minimal—carry essentials; homestays available for overnight stays.
