The Brokpas (or Dards) are believed to have settled in the region over 2,000 years ago, potentially linked to Indo-Aryan tribes who migrated from the Gilgit-Baltistan region.
Dah and its neighboring Brokpa villages were historically semi-autonomous and maintained a distinct identity while being loosely affiliated with the Ladakhi kingdom.
Their language, Brokskat (a Dardic dialect), attire, and animistic rituals set them apart from the dominant Tibetan Buddhist culture of Ladakh.
While Buddhism is now practiced in the region, many ancient customs rooted in nature worship, shamanism, and ancestral reverence are still preserved.
