Overview

Kargyam is a remote and enchanting village located in the pristine valley of the Changthang Plateau in southeastern Ladakh. Tucked away in the Lungparma region, near the border with Tibet, Kargyam lies at an altitude of around 4,400 meters and is known for its rare high-altitude wetlands, rich wildlife, and traditional nomadic lifestyle. It remains one of Ladakh’s most untouched and lesser-visited destinations, ideal for eco-tourists, birdwatchers, cultural travelers, and seekers of absolute tranquility.

Location: Kargyam is a remote high-altitude village located in southeastern Ladakh, close to the Indo-China border and nestled in the Changthang region.

Distance from Leh: Approximately 230–250 km (8–10 hours by road, depending on road conditions).

Accessibility:

  • By Road: Reached via a long, rugged journey through the Leh – Karu – Chang La – Durbuk – Tangtse – Chushul – Tsaga route.

  • Road Conditions: Rough and challenging in several stretches; a high-clearance 4×4 vehicle is strongly recommended.

  • Permits: Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory for both Indian and foreign nationals due to proximity to sensitive border areas.

  • Nearby Services: Limited facilities in the village itself; the nearest basic amenities and shops are in Chushul or Tangtse.
