Overview

Rong–Chumathang is a lesser-known but culturally rich settlement located in the Changthang region of Ladakh, along the banks of the Indus River. Famed for its therapeutic natural hot springs, the area also offers breathtaking views of the rugged Ladakhi landscape. With its tranquil environment, grazing lands, and proximity to traditional nomadic routes, it is a peaceful stopover for travelers exploring eastern Ladakh.

Location & Accessibility

Location: Loma is a strategically located village in southeastern Ladakh, situated at the junction of routes leading to Hanle, Dungti, and Chushul.

Distance from Leh: Approximately 130 km (4–5 hours by road), passing through the scenic Nyoma sector along the Indus River.

Accessibility:

  • By Road:

    • Easily accessible via Leh → Upshi → Chumathang → Nyoma → Loma.

    • Roads are well-paved up to Nyoma, with the final stretch to Loma also being motorable under normal weather conditions.

  • Transport:

    • Private vehicles or taxis are the preferred mode of travel.

    • Public transport is scarce; tour operators occasionally include Loma in extended circuits to Hanle or Chushul.

  • Permits:

    • Indian Nationals: No special permits required for visiting Loma itself.

    • Foreign Nationals: May require Inner Line Permits if continuing toward Hanle, Dungti, or Chushul, which lie in restricted border zones.

  • Road Conditions: Generally good up to Loma, though occasional rough patches may occur depending on weather and maintenance.
