The roots of Hemis are deeply intertwined with the history of Hemis Monastery, which dates back to the 17th century. As the monastery flourished under the patronage of the Namgyal dynasty and the Drukpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, so too did the surrounding village. Generations of villagers have supported and served the monastery, with many local families contributing monks, artisans, and caretakers.
Hemis also holds significance in various Tibetan Buddhist legends. Some even believe it to be linked with the mythical life of Jesus in the East, as claimed in certain apocryphal texts found in the monastery’s archives—though this remains controversial and unverified, it has added to the village’s mystique among certain travelers.
