Ladakh has faced significant challenges in terms of water availability due to its rugged terrain and arid climate. The idea for creating an artificial glacier was introduced by Sonam Wangchuk, a renowned innovator and engineer, as a solution to water shortages. The first artificial glacier was created in 2008 in the village of Phugtal (Zanskar), and since then, the concept has been expanded to several villages across Ladakh.
