Historical and Spiritual Significance

Founded in the 1440s by Changsem Sherab Zangpo, a disciple of the great Gelug master Je Tsongkhapa, Lingshed Monastery is one of the oldest in the region and belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It has remained a center of spiritual practice and learning for centuries, with monks continuing traditional rituals and ceremonies passed down through generations. The monastery also plays a central role in the spiritual life of Lingshed and surrounding villages.

Key Attractions

The monastery is built in a traditional Tibetan style, with whitewashed walls, flat roofs, and prayer-flag-draped balconies perched above the dramatic cliffs of the Zanskar ranges. Inside, one finds prayer halls adorned with murals, ancient thangkas (scroll paintings), and statues of revered Buddhist figures like Shakyamuni Buddha, Guru Rinpoche, and Tsongkhapa. The gompa complex includes monks’ quarters, classrooms, and meditation rooms, forming a small monastic village nestled in the rugged terrain.
