The Leh to Khardung La route is one of the most iconic and challenging cycling routes in the world. Located at an elevation of 5,359 meters, Khardung La is the highest motorable pass, making it a must-ride for cycling enthusiasts. This route combines a strenuous uphill climb with an incredible downhill descent, offering panoramic views of the Nubra Valley and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. While it is physically demanding, the experience of reaching the top is rewarding and memorable.
Additional Tips
Begin your day early to avoid the heat and ensure ample time for both the climb and descent. Prepare your bike, check your gear, and layer your clothing as the temperatures will vary.
After 10 km, stop at South Pullu for a brief rest. Hydrate and have a light snack. You’ll start feeling the altitude here, so take it easy.
Continue up to Dixit Village, where you’ll get another opportunity to rest and acclimatize.
After 4-5 hours of cycling, you'll reach the summit of Khardung La. Here, you can rest, enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains and Nubra Valley, and take photos at this legendary location.
After a short break, you can begin your downhill ride. The descent is much faster, offering spectacular views of the valley and mountains. It will take you around 2-3 hours to get back to Leh.
Arriving back by late afternoon, enjoy a well-deserved meal and rest after this challenging but rewarding ride.
