The Leh to Alchi Monastery route is a more moderate cycling challenge. Located at 3,150 meters, Alchi is known for its ancient Buddhist art, particularly its murals and sculptures. This route offers a long but scenic ride through remote villages, with beautiful views of the Indus Valley. It is a great option for cyclists looking to combine adventure with cultural exploration.
Additional Tips
Start your journey early to cover the 67 km in one day. The route follows the Indus River, offering a blend of barren and lush landscapes.
You’ll pass by Nimmu and Sabu villages, both excellent spots for a quick rest and to enjoy the views.
If you wish, you can take a short detour to the Likir Monastery (4 km from the main route) for a brief exploration.
Upon arrival at Alchi, visit the monastery, which is famous for its ancient wall paintings and sculptures. The Alchi monastery complex is one of Ladakh’s most important Buddhist sites.
After exploring Alchi, start your return journey to Leh.
You will return by late afternoon, completing the round trip in around 8-9 hours.
